How to host an event to help challenge ageism
The Age Without Limits campaign is calling on the whole country to change the way we think about ageing.
We were absolutely delighted that so many people and community groups across the country took part in our first Action Day in March 2024. These inspiring events started so many important conversations about ageism and helped to change the way we all think, feel and act about ageing. Please keep in mind, you don’t have to hold an event in person! Spreading the word online can be a fantastic way to get people talking about the Age Without Limits movement.
If you would like to host an event, below are some ideas you could recreate in your own community to help challenge ageism and embrace positive ageing.
Celebrating the International Day of Older People
Every year on October 1st, people around the world mark the United Nations International Day of Older People. It's all about raising awareness of the opportunities and challenges that come with an ageing population, and rallying the community to celebrate older people in their place.
This year, places across the UK will be using this day as a chance to recognise the crucial role that older people play in their communities, with the theme:
“The part we play”: celebrating the integral role of older people in our communities
Would you like to help mark the day? Get in touch with your local Age-friendly lead by using our map of Age-friendly Communities in the UK.
Do you live in a place that isn’t yet part of the network? Why not send a letter to your councillor asking your place to commit to make ageing better where you are?
Even if you don’t live in an Age-friendly Community, there are lots of ways that you might use this as an opportunity to celebrate the integral role older people play in your community.
